AI Agents Are Beginning to Buy Services by the Call

A growing x402 marketplace is making it possible for AI agents to buy small digital services directly, often for fractions of a cent to a few cents per request.

A market for tools that AI agents can pay to use is taking shape, but this snapshot provides limited evidence of sustainable businesses. The September 9 Agent Demand Radar highlights ten newly tracked offerings, from web search and Japanese weather to synthetic datasets and payment checks, mostly priced in fractions of a cent or a few cents. One telling example is agentstools: source checks on September 10 showed 1,013 recorded payments totaling about $9.68 over 30 days, illustrating how substantial transaction counts can still represent very little money. Across the directory’s measured services, the top ten accounted for 96% of settlement value. These figures warrant care: payment readiness establishes technical compatibility, and recorded payments can include testing or a seller’s own spending. Several entries also have incomplete or conflicting activity records. For a small operator, the report suggests a useful experiment: offer a specific, dependable result and test whether independent buyers return. Its proposed Hungarian official-data service remains an untested idea; the evidence does not yet establish a profitable market for it.
